Folk Music- Bihu: A north- Eastern Melody
Bihu music and dance form is from the Indian state of Assam. This joyous
dance is performed by both young men and women, and is characterized by brisk dance steps, and rapid hand movement, cherry red smiles, red-on-beige costumes, simplicity, gracefulness, natural soothing surroundings.
ETHNIC TAKE ON BIHU:
The nature loving bihu women, with their bright cherry red smile, big round red bindi and beautiful eyes that perfectly complement the simple bihu attire of red-on-beige are our inspiration for this photoshoot. We have given a ethnic-modern twist to the traditional Bihu mekhala by keeping the draping styles similar but changing the silhouette giving it a minimal look, like a toga. In the first image, the mekhala has just been wrapped around the model and just the knot on her shoulder ties and holds the entire outfit together, giving a modern, summer-dress look to it. The mekhala has been draped in different styles around the model. With just a simple red duppatta draped around a beige blouse and the mekhala as a wrap-around skirt, the radiant bihu woman sways to the rhythm of the flowers.
MODERN TAKE ON BIHU:
The modern, independent young woman going on a dinner date with her
friends takes inspiration from the traditional bihu folk attire to dress up. She follows the same color palette- A beige top with a Red skirt. Her hight pony tied up with a satin ribbon, her bright red lipstick and her nude pumps complete her semi-formal, chic look. This photoshoot portrays how ethnic folk attires can inspire and create a foundation for contemporary, western outfits.
